Since its inception in 2014, Prometheus Design Werx has consistently placed a premium on quality over quantity, delivering highly-calculated garments and gear that have been engineered to last a lifetime. And while the San Francisco-based outfit has previously produced a wide range of fixed blade and folding knives, PDW has now unveiled its first-ever out-the-front knife with the all-new SPD Audax. Featuring design inspiration from the Loveless Chute Knife, the SPD STS-B addresses the needs first brought forth by Harry Archer. Archer is the man who initially commissioned the chute knife concept to Loveless. He was looking for an all-around edged tool that could cut parachute lines, aid in wilderness survival, be used for personal safety/defense, etc. This homage to the legendary pattern puts Archer’s vision into a modern, highly detailed purpose driven framelock folder.
Being based in San Francisco, Prometheus Design Werx is well aware of this reality. Wanting to deliver an automatic EDC knife that’s legal to carry in its home state, PDW has now unveiled the CAS OTF. Beautifully matching the aesthetics of the Prometheus Design Werx SPD STS-B is its performance. I used the knife to perform a few of the different functions that I felt held true to its purpose. Regarding self-defense use, I have no doubt it will perform admirably in that function.

I then wanted to check the edge and see how it held up, so I cut up some corrugated cardboard. The edge was still sharp enough to slice up most of a large box without any issue. There were some points that it kind of tore, but I think it was more due to the box being hard to hold onto. Next, I whittled a quick try stick, performing different various reductions and notches. The clip point tip was perfect for prying out chunks of wood for finer detail work.

In June of 2019, 31 years after the debut of the original Sebenza, Chris Reeve Knives released the Sebenza 31 — an ultra-top-shelf folding knife that’s now widely viewed as the holy grail of premium everyday carry blades. Created by PDW’s Special Projects Division (or SPD), the Audax packs an American clip point blade that’s composed of ultra-top-shelf Böhler M390 — unequivocally one of the finest blade steels that money can buy. The blade is deployed using a knurled and ramped, double-action titanium thumb slider that’s been fitted with a dive watch-grade GITD inlay. The SPD Audax OTF Knife also boasts PDW’s signature handle and blade fullers. Taking its name from the Latin word for “bold,” the Audax is constructed around a grooved 6061-T6 aluminum handle that’s been fortified via a type III hard-anodized coating.
Overall, the SPD STS-B was very comfortable and easy to control during this process. It is not recommended to baton a folding knife to split wood because it is hard on the pivot. So, making a wedge will preserve your knife in an emergency survival scenario.
